What's in your med / first aid kit?
Quote from nathanu on September 19, 2022, 11:14 pmMy current kit started very small and has grown over time, typically by "ooooh, that's a good idea and it's super small and light so it won't hurt to add it". As you may have guessed, I've decided I've added too much and need to prune it down. I've also found some holes that need to be filled. Curious to hear what you guys pack in your medkit and what recommendations you have for mine.
- Adhesive bandages, various sizes
- Gauze, various sizes
- Alcohol wipes
- Med tape
- Ace bandage
- Moleskin
- Tenacious tape
- Patch kits for anything inflatable
- Lighter
- Safety pin
- Tweezers
- Emergency blanket
- Tampon (in case someone else needs it and it is excellent for a puncture or gunshot wound)
- Triple antibiotic
- Bug spray
- Bite / sting spray
- Benadryl
- Ibuprofin (vitamin I, Ranger candy)
- Asprin
- Immodium
- Melatonin
- Antacid
I think that's it. I keep it in a little red "First Aid" pouch I found somewhere.

Quote from flipflop on September 26, 2022, 4:00 pmI would have never thought of a safety pin, lighter, tampon or Imodium. I have not started actually putting my kit together yet but this is kindof an eye opener. I now know a little more about what I dont know!

Quote from AlaskaGeezer on January 28, 2023, 1:45 amI carry New Skin - which I paint on cuts, scratches, blisters and burns. A CPR mask when I am going with other people who aren't Spring chickens. Cheesecloth (filter debris out of water prior to sanitizing or for making a sling, etc) hydrogel patches for blisters, sports tape of feet, knees, etc and steri-strips. I've substituted duct take strips for steri strips (in lieu of suture material for large, deep cuts). Lidocaine patches.
The other day I was in Fred Meyer's (its a big grocery store) and they were selling snake bite kits. We don't have snakes in Alaska. That I can skip with confidence.

Quote from nathanu on January 30, 2023, 9:31 pm@alaskageezer welcome to the site and thanks for the info! I've heard pretty compelling arguments both ways on the efficacy of snake bite kits but I've never thought about areas, like Alaska, where they legitimately just aren't needed. Very cool insight!
