It's been a bit of a challenge but I believe that I just removed all of the non-existent accounts and I re-enabled the reCAPTCHA for user registrations and logins. We had about 400 new users that registered in the last three or four days and I'm pretty sure none were legitimate (if you logged on and got your account deleted, my apologies).
