I am trying to get into hiking and backpacking and found this website in a link from groups.io.  It looks like the site is pretty new but the idea seems really neat.  I avoid social media pages, so there arent a lot of other places to meet people.  Hope it takes off.

Very cool that you found us on Groups.io and thanks for giving it a shot.  The site is still *very* new and I'm figuring a lot of it out as I go but would love for you to stick around and be a part of the community.  Hiking (usually 2 to 6 miles or so) and backpacking (usually 5 to 20 mile trips, 1 or 2 nights) are kindof my thing at the moment. I'm definitely not an expert but I'd be happy to be a sounding board and offer any advice that I can.

Like @nathanu, I don't consider myself an expert, but I do have lots of experience. And I too am happy to provide you with any guidance or opinions.  That was the beauty of the old REI site.  You had a lot of diverse people with varying levels of experience all coming together to share stories and wisdom, and ask questions about things they didn't know.  And it was all pretty much judgment-free. I'm optimistic about this site.
