Golden one liners

Sometimes advice, good or bad, needs explaining.  How to hang your bear bag.  How to dig a cat hole (is that 2 words or one?).  Bidet or TP.  Sometimes, a single line gives you all you need.  What are some one liners that have stuck with you?

I'll start with two that have stuck with me.

  • Two is one,  one is none.
  • Double bag your toilet paper and fire starter.

Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. This is something my  mother would always tell me. Later the scouts said it more clearly, Be Prepared.

I can't believe I hadn't thought to add this one a while ago.  "Be bold. Start cold."  Is that a one-liner?  Or two?  Maybe I should use a comma...???

This is one I pretty much live by during the winter months (and late fall/early spring). I really don't like being cold, but I tend to heat up quickly, even on a mild, flat hike.  If I start out comfortable I'll be sweating in no time. And if that happens, I end up being colder longer at the end of the hike.

Be careful where you poke your trekking poles.  Not sure if that one's famous yet but it was definitely a lesson learned on the Neels Gap to Testanee Gap trip.  It wasn't on purpose but, apparently, one of my trekking poles went into a hole that had a yellow-jacket nest in it.  I learned, right then, that I can sprint up hill with a full pack 🙂  But, I didn't get stung.
